I'm feeling really down today.
I've worked with a woman named Sandy for 15 years. She is a wonderful woman who is always doing things for others, and I love her like family.
Sandy hasn't had an easy life-she had lousy, abusive parents who kicked her out at 16, causing her to enter into an early marriage to someone that she didn't really love. Not surprisingly, the marriage wasn't happy and didn't last. Her one joy in her life has been her two sons. They are both great kids, and she provided them with the kind of love and homelife that she had never had.
Her youngest son Russ is 36 and has terminal liver disease due to complications from Crohn's disease. He's on the waiting list for a liver transplant. It is physically painful for me to see him, as he is now. He was once a tall, husky, healthy young man, always smiling and joking around. He now looks like a yellow walking skeleton. He is constantly on the strongest pain meds available, and they aren't always strong enough.
I got called in to work yesterday morning for last night. Normally that is not something that I appreciate on my weekend off but this time I was thrilled because it was because Sandy had been called at 10:30 Sat. night that a liver had become available, and they had 6 hours to get Russ to Mayo Hosp. Russ's doctor flew to where ever the donor was to procure the organ, but unfortunately, when he got into the surgery, he found that the liver wasn't viable. Sandy, Russ, and his wife were already at Mayos by the time the doctor called to tell them the news. You can imagine how disappointed they were, and they then had to turn around and make the 4 hour drive back home. The kid just can't seem to catch a break-everything that can go wrong just seems to for him, and I don't know how much longer he can find the strength to keep on fighting.
When you say your prayers tonight, please add one for Russ.

I am so sorry.
I plan to be an organ donor, and every member of my family knows this. I think it is something very important for everyone to at least consider. If it is something you wish to do- make sure your family knows. Lives can be saved.
I will be wishing your friend and her son the very best.
